College Football Landscape Earthquake

Miami has been so non-competitive in that series, who cares if they drop us. Maybe at some point, we’ll properly fund the program and get a little better, but until then, meh…

I think football is about as funded as it is going to get. Brand new facilities etc. If we aren’t beating UC, (especially this year) funding in my humble opinion is not the problem.

Back to the merger and “student athletes.”

How would you like to be the walk on pre-med and the 2nd string goalie (they never get in unless it’s an absolute blowout) on the womens soccer team. Got a trip to Oregon and going to miss couple days worth of your your 300 or 400 level classes, that maybe you’re struggling in a bit, to fly take to fly out to the west Coast and sit on the bench. They already have significant travel time issues now it’s even worse.

How long would you put up with this gunk before you turn your cleats in?

Now repeat the same sort of situation for 10-12 other “non-major” sports in both mens and womens sports.

Now the latest buzz is Cal and Stanford to the ACC. I am just going to say it outright, no hedging, no hypotheticals, no examples–Universities and Boards of Trustees don’t give a damn about these athletes or academics. Because if they did, they wouldn’t be sending them 3000 miles to play a conference game!

Man who plays the blues, I think it was their only hope. It’s a bad deal but at least there’s money there. I can’t imagine it will be forever as clearly some of the ACC is going to become SEC but it’s a stable place to land if true. At least for a while. Sucks for the kids, but so does going from playing big time schools to the dregs if they do nothing.

If the PAC decides to keep the four together and add pieces from the American like SMU, RIce, Tulane and perhaps UConn, I would expect Buffalo to bolt for the AAC, fulfilling their fans’ long-time dream.

If so, who does the MAC backfill with? Eastern Kentucky? Illinois State? MIssouri State? Somebody from CUSA?

Wouldn’t they (Pac-whatever) try to fill with teams from MWC first? At least that makes some geographic sense. I realize there are hefty buyout numbers to contend with but that makes more sense. As far as UB, just to answer your question, I am on the phone with WKU to gauge their interest.

They probably won’t come without MTSU. The MAC wanted a pair last time it came up. I’m guessing today it’s a moot point because it looks like Cal and The Farm are going to the ACC, leaving OSU and WSU no place to go but the MWC.

I am still confused about the draw of Buffalo to another conference. The last time the MAC was talking to two teams to expand to keep divisions even, IF,IF Buffalo were to leave I think the MAC would be good with just a replacement and not “expanding”.

That was my question, 89. Who would replace Buffalo?

Not sure who they would get, just saying they might only go after one school if one school leaves. I could be remembering wrong but I thought the expansion didn’t go through a few years ago because only one school wanted to join the MAC and not both.

Yes. My question was about which single school might be targeted by the MAC to replace Buffalo if the Bulls leave. You are right. The discussion two years ago was about bringing MTSU and WKU in in tandem to give us 14 instead of 12. When MTSU decided to stay in CUSA, the MAC decided not to pursue WKU as a single accretion which would have given us an unbalanced 13.

Would WKU come in as the 14th team and leave MTSU behind? It might.

We won’t be looking at anyone in Ohio - with Youngstown being the only option. I don’t think Indiana State has any interest, nor the necessary resources.

Illinois State, EKU and Missouri State are teams I threw out as a possibility. Northern Iowa could be a possibility, too. It’s probably FBS ready today…

I agree with Blues, though, that the preferred get would be WKU - all by itself.

As of tonight the ACC seems to be looking at Cal and Stanford plus SMU from the American. If SMU goes, that could open the door for Buffalo in the American.

Chuck is the only mens head coach to win a championship

What is the draw from Buffalo?

The chicken wings. Duh!

Their fans have been targeting AAC membership for several years. It appears their athletic department would be on board with this move. They are a member of the prestigious AAU and - as much as it sticks in our crawl - they are the highest ranked academic institution in the MAC on the US News and World Report list.

UB fans would still be interested? The current AAC looks like CUSA from 5 years ago. And if they lose SMU then the only really non MAC like programs would be Memphis and South Florida.

I’m pretty sure UB would see this as a step up in terms of national prominence - especially with Navy, Rice, Tulane, ECU and Memphis. And Temple gives them a natural travel partner. Several of these schools play in 50,000 seat stadiums.

If the ACC should take SMU and Tulane, I could see UB and UConn taking their place in tandem.

After the WKU/MTSU addition fell through, the MAC message board (with input from other programs’ fans) has speculated about bringing back UMass as a full member and possibly UCONN for FB to bring larger markets and increase the media money.

Just something to think about
