Um, no.

In 2013 (the year after Charlie Coles’ last season), Minnesota had the fourth best offense in the Big 10 and a top 20 offense nationally. That season, they averaged 63 points in conference games and were held to 50 or fewer in five separate games. If you’re going to argue that was more entertaining basketball, you’re either trolling or insane.

I love defense. Enjoying watching UVa

Fundamentals is starting to sound like a replacement for admitting the sport is too fast for someone to follow. It’s really easy for your defense to look good when you play slow offense.

@skin66 - winning games through 1v1 freedom requires fundamentals, and it sounds like you missed those fundamentals for what was important for your interpretation of the game. To beat someone 1v1 you need:

  • to be a shooting threat, otherwise the defense will sink
  • be quick, otherwise the defense will crowd
  • be able to dribble, or you won’t get beat anyone
  • be a threat to shoot off the dribble, or the defense will sag and take away your speed
  • have multiple deceptive moves, or you won’t get free
  • be able to pass, or you’ll be turnover prone and easily doubled
  • be able to finish at the rim, or they’ll just take away your jumpshot and let you drive all day
  • be able to analyze a defense, or you’ll take an ok shot, but miss a great shot

Even off the ball you need to be moving to make the double team harder, but also to open up that better shot when it comes.

If you take that away, all you’re teaching them is how to mindlessly run to a spot, catch the ball, mindlessly pass to a spot. Please tell me you didn’t install a motion offense…

@Phil04 I like watching good defense, but I like watching good defense against good offense. What existed was defense against bad offense.

Totally agree. Watching good teams play, especially when they’re different profiles of team, is loads of fun.

I want to raise my hand to @Quinoaburger though and say I enjoy college basketball games when scoring is in the 50s and 60s.

You usually don’t get games in the 50s with just good defense. You need good defense AND slow pace AND bad offense. Good defense is no problem. Slow pace isn’t necessarily bad. But when you combine all three, it’s horrific to watch.

Disagree. Seems like you’re hung up on pace. That’s fine, personal preference. But UVa has played many games with great defense, efficient offense, and slow pace which end in the 50s. Hell, that was pretty much the blueprint for Charlie Coles’ tenure at Miami.

Listen man, this current version of basketball is just a three point shooting contest. It’s not a good watch. You and Jive can spout all the stats you want, but it doesn’t pass the eyeball test.

I used to love basketball. Played for 25 years, refereed and coached for 10. I used to say it was the greatest team sport in the world. No longer. The rule changes, refereeing, and coaching based on analytics have promoted individual play and ruined the beauty.

The millennials (not surprisingly) think that faster pace and higher scores equates to better basketball. They’re the same ones who think playing rap at high decibels during pregame is cool. I could watch Bo Ryan’s teams all day.

Watching the game, it became clear that we need a PG. Thankfully, there are two finishing their sr yr. Going to be an issue all year. No, I don’t in any way blame Lairy. He’s not a PG by birth. He’s a 2 in a 1’s body. But he can play.

He will play pro after school.

The numbers don’t support mid-range shooting, but how much of that is because it doesn’t get worked on? We’ll agree to disagree that if the midrange were emphasized, specifically pull-up jumpers, percentages would improve. With how reckless players are at challenging 3 pointers, jumping for every shot fake, there is room for the shotfake, 1 or 2 dribble pullup jumper.

Here’s a link to NCAA overall 3 point field goal percentage from its inception through 2021. Note, the 3 point line was moved back in 2008-09 and 2019-20. While there were bump ups in shooting percentage prior to the line moving back, the shooting percentage has basically stayed the same 34-35%.

I think you just disproved your point. Ryan’s last team was one of the leaders in 3 point attempts (top 25). Half of their top 6 guys in minutes had a 3pt attempt rate over 55%. Most of their team had a 3pt attempt rate over 30%. And they were in the top third in shot attempts. They shot a lot of 3s at a fast pace.

So if it’s worse, why did Bo Ryan coach his team that way?

Lol. Dude your first post stated that you haven’t watched basketball since Charlie left, but you seem to have all the answers as to why it’s hard to watch.

Go away lol

Because Bo Ryan is a genius.

Do you like it when Bo Ryan does it but not others… Maybe there’s something else there.

Your 3pt pump fake only works if you’re actually a good 3pt shooter. So the prerequisite to your strategy is being a good 3 point shooter. Second, every team already practices it. Third, we have players who do it. Lairy does it all the time. He’s shooting 34% from midrange. Mabrey also does it, he’s 55.5% from midrange (5/9). He’s the only player on the team with more than 1 midrange shot who’s over 40%.

Can we agree there’s finite time to practice? So what are you replacing that practice time with? And how much to do expect to increase that percentage by? And keep in mind, with all the effort put into 3 point shooting, its average hasn’t gone up… So you’re willing to take time away from something else to improve a shot a couple of percentage points at best? Keep in mind, if you practice it over deep shooting, you take away the likelihood your move even works.

Again, it’s not that midrange shots are bad, too many is just a sign of a poorly designed or executed offense.

I still want to know whether Butler was playing zone or man in 2004. Travis Steele knows!

I’m astonished that your need to “win” is so great that you would take the time to do an in depth analysis of the shooting stats of Bo Ryan’s last team.

Did you like Bo Ryan because he didn’t recruit the millennials who like rap music?
