Basketball arena

I just made a sizable donation to fund accountancy scholarships.

The original argument was about the community being mad certain academics were getting cut while the money is there for the arena. All I am saying is Miami is receiving donations for the arena and not for those majors

I made one years ago to fund the adult films program but sadly, it was cut

Actually Miami will not be able to fund the new arena on donations alone. They will have to get a loan for the balance and that won’t be insignificant. That is what is making people unhappy. Putting it on Cook Field is just another stick in the eye.

That’s unfortunate. I hear it’s supposed to be better when it’s uncut.

Daniel I was going to say, this is not true. Many people fund academic programs on campus. It just isn’t publicized like other things.

Yeah I created a scholarship for students in my field and fund it annually. I’m happy to donate money for academics.

We better not loose Steele or Box over the school’s inability to make a decision on this

What you are saying is actually the total crux of the issue. The purpose of a coach is to get the program good enough to earn Miami positive attention. So that more people hear about the school. Maybe that helps with enrollment. More people go to games. Maybe that generates revenue if we start selling out. And more alumni donate big checks. Steele is making national news by virtue of us being undefeated. Box doing nice work but program likely a year away from giant success. We can talk about how mad the townies are (yelling into a strong wind will get the same result) or how mad the students are to have to walk over to Millett grass for recreation (this might actually help show them the way to the football stadium) or how mad the profs are because they deserve more money (prolly true!) but it ignores the reality of the why: a new hoops+events arena drives the biggest potential ROI and that’s why the school needs to do it now. If they don’t do it, then we all just need to buy that barge and build our own floating casino/arena we can rent to Miami. Redhawk Casino. Has a nice ring to it, although that could be the slot machines I’m hearing. They’re programmed to win more. Also, Third Eye Blind is playing.

This is the correct answer.

I made this exact point earlier in the week. Agree completely.

The magic of cook field died when they built that stupid bell tower and killed the 20/20 bike race

anyone arguing against the need for a new arena is just not thinking clearly. Millett is 60 years old–i think Miami has gotten more than their moneys worth on that facility (as awful as it is). Spending large sums of good money on an outdated, long past its prime facility is just poor fiscal decision making. We need a new arena–pure and simple. It has to happen–like 20 years ago. As for location, anywhere but where our athletic facilities are now is an improvement. Cook is not some sacred cow–anyone arguing that is out of their mind. Regarding traffic at that intersection–perhaps building something there will allow an improved traffic design to come to fruition. Miami has plenty of green space and will continue to have it once Millett is removed. Things change and we have to continually improve. In years past everyone was up in arms that losing the “water tower” was going to be the end of Miami/Oxford as we know it–now, anyone who would say uptown isn’t light years nicer as a result of the changed traffic flow and improved aesthetics of that area is crazy. Build it, build it, build it. The cost seems like a lot up front but if it’s thought about over a 50+ year period its a great deal.

This is a long ongoing problem in Oxford. Let me take you back to the 70’s when McDonalds first wanted to come to town. They wanted the space occupied by Jacks Corner clothing shop (where Chipotle is now) and the preservationists rallied and said no. McDonald’s came back. Sainting they would keep everything they could to historical standards. Eventually the preservationists won out. The morning after the Ciry of Oxford meeting to formally deny the application Jack, the owner had a wrecking ball tear the building down.

There was a hole in the uptown are where Baskin Robbin’s and Bruno’s was for a long time because of a fire until they finally approved a building permit.

There was an outcry over the Pulley Tower, as mentioned before and now, no one is crying.

There was an outcry over the thinning of Bishop Woods and now, no one is crying.

The same will be the case with the arena. The students will adapt, the townies will eventually see the value and forget about it.

I personally believe it to be the best site to build the new facility. I just hope I live long enough to see it!

Millett is so hilariously terrible. It’s sad when we play other mid majors such as Wright St and see how much nicer their arena looks than ours.

It also displays how good of a recruiter Steele is to convince the caliber of players we have to play at our current arena.

It’s like “didn’t we already have a bell tower?”
Lazy insignificant design. It could go and no one would remember it was there.

Bell Tower is staying, and Bake will perch on top of it during games to broadcast!! Also giving live birds eye views of the campus and weather reports!

Rejoice, brothers and sisters, I am back. The Truth Bringer under a new username. Here I am, bringing precious information on this topic:

  1. The Hotel is gone. There is no longer a partner interested in building something at Miami due to concerns related to weekday occupancy.
  2. Are you ready for this? Here it comes. Brace yourselves: There may be a second Farmer School of Business building at Cook, where the hotel was supposed to be. FSB was supposed to take over Marcum, but Marcum will stay, and FSB will get a second building. (there will likely be burned buses and strikes once the humanities people learn about this)
  3. There are still discussions on a fancy restaurant connected to the Arena.
  4. There is no money. I repeat. There is no money. The Polytechnic campus in Hamilton is sucking money out of the university like there is no tomorrow. All the State money is going towards that building, and there is nothing left for the Arena.
  5. Regardless of money, the BoT will likely give the green light in February. Miami’s debt is relatively low now. So, the university will take out a massive loan (aka, issue bonds) to pay for the building.

Peace out

Will the fancy restaurant serve chicken tenders and fries?

Thanks for the update!

The “finding” of $250M will be from 5-8 notable Miami alums/supporters with a passion for Miami athletics.
