Basketball arena

Yep.Lots of obvious ardent RedHawks fans in their steering group! Lol

Spring Street is getting a big change: Williams Hall, Wells Hall, Joyner House and Hanna House are all going to be razed. Bonham House will remain. I’d prefer the new basketball arena to be placed on the demo site, tbh.

I concur with this notion. Seems like a very logical choice to me, but what do I know?

I’m with you on this one. TBH the Cook Field intersection is a disaster at the change of classes and when big evens are going on. You’re asking for that area to get more congested?

The Spring Street location gets the arena with hockey. Just knock down Phillips already and use that space!

I was at the hockey game on Friday, and yeah, putting the new there seems to make more sense from a traffic perspective. The auto traffic can route you out by SDS and onto 27 pretty easily. Seems like a no-brainer.

I assumed that Miami tearing down the buildings along Spring and Oak in order to facilitate a back up plan. I asked one of the professors who was involved in this survey if that was the reason for tearing down these buildings .He said ā€œno, those building are coming down because of increased maintenance expenses.ā€ However it may be serving two purposes simultaneously. Because I live in Oxford, I can sense that the city and residents are overwhelmingly against it. So are the uptown businesses. There is going to be a board of trustees meeting in February where they will decide whether to move forward with this plan and in what direction.

Question regarding Millett and the new basketball arean………..have they thought about using the space in front of Millett connecting a new main floor to the existing structure? The parking stays the same, the current game floor becomes one fantastic vball floor and 2nd practice floor while also still a concert hall. Can’t even fathom that Cook Field was even considered.

The city and residents of Oxford are against what?

Here is why I don’t see your proposed plan as viable: cost. Under your scenario, you still have all the costs to be incurred to renovate Millett (and importantly bring it up to code) plus the cost of adding this additional structure to Millett. And I am not entirely sure where you are talking about adding this in front of Millett, but Miami is currently in the process of finishing up the geothermal project in that large green space in front of Millett which would probably not be available for any significant digging and excavation a new building would require.

Heppy, forgive me for asking, but your post is unclear to me about which plan the residents are overwhelmingly against? Building the arena on the Cook Filed site? Or the tear down of the three buildings along Spring Street?

The arena being located at Cook Field. They do not like that Miami continually tears down old historic buildings, instead of renovating them, but I do not think they would be opposed to putting the new arena near the hockey arena. What they don’t like about the Cook Field site is the traffic problems at that intersection and the loss of green space. Better to infill development rather than using limited green spaces.

Thx!

This has all the odor of academic, town and gown, leaderless meandering and everyone getting more pissed off until a decision is reached.
And answer me this…how much ā€œstudent street crossing/ foot trafficā€ goes on by Cook Field on the occasional weekday evenings and weekend afternoons when there is a men or women’s basketball game or a volleyball game scheduled???
Will Miami’s Freshmen men and women’s athletes ever play in the arena or will the debate drag groundbreaking on into the next decade, again, Yager drumbeats all over this.

Just start building the damn thing already. The haters will get over it.

What’s historic about cook field?! It’s a piece of grass (half of which is turf). The pulley tower is still gonna be there

I’m not weighing in on the site location one way or the other at this point, but every time we are in Oxford, which is pretty frequently the last few years, that corner is busy including afternoons and weeknights. Remember, kids coming to and from Farmer, both for classes and dining, are generally using that intersection if they live on north campus. I think that is north. I get my directions confused. I am not saying that should be the deciding factor one way or the other, just commenting on the amount of traffic you brought up. My daughter who lives at Maplestreet, goes to the dining hall by Farmer, as she says the food is better.

There is a small patch of natural grass there that I have emotional attachment to and it holds historic value for me!

And the green space will shift to where Millett now stands

In any event, there is a Board of Trustees meeting in February so hopefully we will know more then. I know Coaches Steele and Box would like to see some positive movement.

People love to complain for the sake of complaining. The traffic will be fine, maybe a slight impact around game time, but most of those are 7pm or on a weekend. The arena will be amazing and probably bring more fun events, activity, involvement, and MONEY for both the school and greater Oxford
