I went to a Saturday night game between Washington and Stanford on the Farm two years ago a Halloween. There were more Washington fans there than Stanford students. They cut their stadium size almost in half about 25 years ago and modernized it. They still don’t fill it except for the Cal game and sometimes for USC. ---

Tulsa had a weeknight home game earlier this year that would have competed with some of the worst MACTION attendance we have ever had. ---

NIL perhaps, transfers perhaps, losing the sense of identity with the team would perhaps explain some of the poor attendance. This would make an excellent doctoral thesis. Bee Gee has really good attendance ,despite a horrible ,team due to the band. After halftime there is an exodus. My wife and I went to Bee Gee a few weeks ago to see the band. Parking lot was busy after half. ---

Miami fans are certainly fair weather. Most of the time is really bad. But sometimes it is amazingly good - especially the students. The last 5 games of the year in basketball had enormous crowds but also in 2024 we hosted UC football and had a record student attendance ever! We announced 24k in total and 8600 were students. Almost half the student body! There are many factors but I dont think our student body identifies with the MAC. Will UAB or East Carolina be better? I think Memphis- Army-Navy yes ---

I don’t think it will necessarily be the names alone that help attendance (although I’m sure the bigger names will) but mainly being in a better conference and knowing you are playing more relevant football with a real shot at the CFP if you win the conference. So many students don’t care for Miami sports because they don’t see the MAC as a real conference, hopefully the AAC would help that ---

If we play Army you can be certain there will be a big crowd. Same with Navy. Temple in hoops and USF as well. ECU? Maybe not but still worth getting out of the doormat to see. ---

Really? We think that Army is going to draw a crowd? I’ve been in the Army 20 years this year and wouldn’t be the least interested in seeing Army in Oxford ---

Army drew a crowd when I was a student. Lots of brand appeal. They way they flew into Oxford and then drove the convoy in was pretty insane. ---

Last time Miami played Army in Oxford was 2011, with Miami winning 35-28. That game drew nearly 15,000 despite the fact that our Treadwell-coached team was 0-4 at the time and had just lost 27-0 to UC. Army was very weak that year, too. A good Miami team against a good Army team in a good conference would easily draw 20,000+, methinks. ---

A more interesting and higher ranking conference will help, but we’re still going to struggle to draw unless we win more. Averaging 6-8 wins per year with almost zero signature OOC wins isn’t exciting for students or alumni. Look around social media, a lot of pro and college teams are struggling to draw (mostly economic imo). For us to buck the trend will take a legitimately great season (like basketball just had) or a few really good ones in a row. ---

I think we just need to schedule smarter. Chuck with all his issues does have some wins against better g6 teams (UNT, Colorado State, UConn). If we limit our OOC schedule to 1 maybe 2 p4 teams (depending on if the AAC ever goes to an 9 game regular season) and try schedule the lower ranked ones we can have some momentum and maybe get some media attention (look at JMU this year). ---

You are being a little generous when you say Chuck has a few OOC wins against some decent teams. How about a couple wins over a decade? Just think what winning that game against UC this year would have meant for our student attendance at our next home game? We have played a number of beatable P4 teams over the Chuck era, and for the vast majority we “rolled over and played dead” for the most part (at least based on Chuck’s pregame defeatist comments and our lack luster game plan and play calling. So we rarely have any positive momentum to build enthusiasm going into MAC play because we have lost almost every meaningful OOC game. ---

I don’t disagree that chucks rolling over and dying in noncon but we also haven’t done ourselves tons of favors with scheduling. Look at Toledos non con compared to ours every year. The fact is it doesn’t seem like Chuck is going anywhere so we have to work with what we have. Would the attendance have been full against holy cross if we beat UC? I’m not so sure, we had about 15k in 2023 the week after beating UC against Delaware state which is more than the 11k we had for holy cross this year, but not by a ton and the student side certainly wasn’t great in 2023 against DSU ---

Are you kidding us? Martin doesn’t even try to win the non-conference games. What else explains why we get slaughtered playing good Power 4 teams? It either means he’s not trying, or we’re simply not that good. The program is stuck in neutral. We need a change at the top. Winning the MAC, to me, doesn’t hold much weight because it’s a crappy football conference (though I do like it for basketball). Let’s hope that we get into the AAC sooner rather than later. ---
