#23 MIAMI V BUFFALO PART 2-GAME NOTES AND GAME THREAD

We are starting to show signs of fatigue. I want us to win the next two very bad. If we lose at UMASS, so be it.

Screw that. ‘76 Hoosiers are on notice.

We didn’t play particularly well and still won. We can get even better by March.

Unfortunately Phil by necessity. I’m not a metrics guy but looking at the metrics by our bench, not a pretty picture tonight.

Hopefully Almar gets out of his shooting slump and maybe Waltz can give us a few good minutes to spell Suder, Byers or Elmer. And I agree with others, fatigue is showing but we need to have a bench that is contributing.

A week ago Luke was who knows how sick. Tonight he won the game with 19 points. This is why they’re 23-0.

It sucks that the team is weathering winter illnesses now, but I guess they’d rather deal with it in early February than early March.

ETA: This reminds me of seeing Eddie Schilling around campus our freshman year. He was petrified of getting sick and missing games, so he started wearing a wool beanie everywhere pretty much the minute practices started in October. It was pretty funny.

I think he will get better.

That was a “Grant Hill drinks Sprite!” level of getting arched…

Really dating myself with that reference.

The upside is we have played fair to poor on D, not close to our potential on 3’s and miss clutch FT’s and still find a way to win- a lot of room for improvement- we have not played our best game yet- lets start getting better this coming Sat at Marshall

I actually think (except for shooting anything longer than 8 feet) Perry has started to play well. He is getting boards

Robbins and Walz struggled today

Atlatson is just a mess. He forced some shots and then missed a wide open 3. Atlatson actually made some big 3s vs Umass but he couldnt guard their bigs

It needs to be mentioned more often, but since January 1, 2025, Miami men’s basketball has now won 40 of their last 45 games. Incredible.

First, congrats to the team for winning in a gym that’s hard to win in. It’s still a road birdie. We beat a team that was desperate to win on their home floor who we’ve already played. No apologies for that. Akron was down 9 in Ypsi with 9 minutes to play and had to pull it out. Like Phil said, this is early February conference basketball.

This game felt like some others this season. We had a chance to put them away and we didn’t. Subbing after going on the run was curious, but I’m ok with it. When would be another time to get guys some rest.

Defensively, our efficiency number was comparable with the Akron and Toledo games, which is good enough. I don’t think Buffalo scored off an inbounds play tonight. They only had 2 2nd chance points. However, we got caught ball watching and left shooters open and were lucky they didn’t make a couple more. A few other times, we inexplicably left the ball and they made some shots. Almost everyone was guilty of this, starters and bench.

Offensively, we won playing a slower, more tournament-like game. Almost everyone made an important shot at some point. Skaljac was clutch as usual. Woolfolk stepped up late, including the lefty swooping hook in the paint. Perry hit a nice floater. But we could’ve put their bad defenders in greater conflict more consistently. We drove too deep on a few occasions which led to some of our turnovers.

And we have to finish it off in the last 2 minutes. I thought Skaljac should’ve taken the layup after the block.

But hey, 23-0 and still #1. Just terrific. Now time to watch some Marshall tape.

When Miami played UB in Buffalo last season, 1176 fans were in attendance. Tonight’s game had 3 times that number. It’s exciting to be that much of a draw!

And we will continue to be a big draw in Huntington, where the mutual hate still burns for many!

My complaint/concern is putting both Perry and Atlason on the floor together. Because of the immediate defensive dropoff we saw numerous times last night. Twice in fact, double digit leads dwindle to nothing when they were inserted together. Play Perry when Atlason is not on the floor and vice versa.

It baffles me. We know Travis looks at analytics data. He talks about it all the time. We also know he has eyes. Those guys can not play together. They are the two worst defenders on the team both by the numbers and the eye test.

Atlason is having a really tough stretch. He really struggles defensively, especially since he is almost always in when Antwone is not, so he can’t rely on that help. He needs to bring something on the offensive end to trade off for that but he has totally lost his shot. I don’t think we have the roster to reduce his minutes much though. He just needs to start playing better.
