Neither HH or TG were going to be successful last year with how our O-line played. Some of the o-line play I’m sure is a byproduct of the play calling, but they were also not great towards the end of the year.
Anyone trying to project Miami’s QB situation is really just throwing out pure speculation. We have TG who has only a sample size of a handful of games. David McComb a Kansas transfer who I believe has not thrown a pass in FBS action. And Cale Heavner who also has yet to throw a pass in a FBS game. So on the one hand I can see skeptism about Miami’s QB situation. On the other hand we have more unknowns than knowns when it comes to this unit.
From what I’m hearing, this Nelson kid is the real deal. Can’t wait to see him play.
Nelson tore up FCS. I think that carries over to MAC play for certain. Not the biggest guy but talented. And versatile.
And the College Football News has done a surprisingly deep dive into Miami. The most telling statistic I saw was that we were dead last in all of FBS in QB completion percentage last season at a dismal 49.3%. And in the 6 games in which our QBs failed to complete at least 50% of their passing attempts, we had a record of 1-5.
So, needless to say, we need Gotkowski to take a big step, and/or for our new Kansas transfer David McComb to live up to his potential. I love his size, 6’ 4" - 220 lbs, really hoping he becomes the guy.

I think Miami and WMU are the best teams in the MAC for this coming year. After that UT, OU, and who knows.
Calling the number of long pass plays we do tends to drive down completion percentage, I don’t care who is behind center. I would like to see some evolution of our offensive game plan beyond “chunk plays” that Chuck and Co. are so enamored with.
I wonder how much control Chuck will allow Ragland. I have my doubts that the offensive philosophy will change much, particularly considering his history as a former Chuck QB, but fresh blood is fresh blood. And he’s young, so perhaps more relatable to the players, and his QB background should be a major asset for developing McComb and Gotkowski.
Edit: that said, even though all the news about Ragland being promoted to OC that came out after Pat Welsh moved on to CSU after the season, Miami hasn’t made that update on their website. So who knows.
