Byers is going to play in an empty gym on a losing team with a possible lame duck coach. Don’t tell me it’s not about the money.
Has anyone claimed it’s not about $$?

=>EMU has 4 incoming transfers so far. None from a D1 school.
Man, early transfer results points to the MAC being trash next year outside of Miami and UMASS
Nobody’s telling you that. It 100% has to be about money. What is crazy to me is thinking about how much money is Brant Byers getting to play college basketball? He’s a good player, had a couple of nice seasons at Miami, but that’s it. He’s a nice mid major player. He’s not, and will never be Wally, or anything close. My guess is Penn State is paying him in the $750K-$1MM range, which he will never sniff as a pro. Good for him though.
This new world will also have an impact not only on how many HS kids you take, but also, what is the socioeconomic background of the HS kid I’m recruiting. If I’m choosing between a kid with a two parent household earning $400K and a poor inner city kid where the talent is equal, I’m taking the kid from money as he is less likely to leave.
I think this is a mistake. You can’t guess. These kids might take the next school for 20-50k in walking around money. So it’s a crap shoot. Coaches know they have to recruit everyone year to year. That’s the new college landscape . Doesn’t matter what background you come from. And Brant is a damn good player which the market confirmed because he basically picked his school at his price.
Oh and my daughter lived in the football dorms her freshman year and these kids to the player planned to use Miami as a springboard to an NIL payday, background had nothing to do with it.
Beggars can’t be choosers, but any way to bold or highlight the new info when you re-post this @mollautt? Would be much appreciated!
I think Byers himself is an example why this is a bad assumption. With some cursory internet research, I determined that his father is the co-owner of a welding and metal fabrication facility that appears to have a fairly large staff. Byers just made the decision to go play basketball in a bigger conference closer to home at a school that is a top-30 university in the US News rankings and get a large bag for doing so. That’s probably a good decision whether your family income is $10,000 or $1,000,000.
It sucks that we won’t have him on our alma mater’s team next year, but I don’t think I could present a plausible argument that he has made an obvious mistake.
This is a little bleak. Get the talent and enjoy it while you have it wherever it comes from. Put another way, you get what you get and you don’t get upset. I think that might have been Nell Carter. Rip to her, but she did that goldfish dirty.
I probably should have done a better job of making my points. The second point about kids from more affluent backgrounds was meant to be separate from Byers. I wish Byers the best. I think he is a nice player and should take advantage of the opportunity afforded to him. He is probably worth $1MM as a college player, but nowhere near that in pro leagues That type of valuation probably won’t last, but good for Brant for taking advantage.
My second point which I probably did a poor job of making was about recruiting kids out of HS. HS recruiting is a crapshoot, and it’s more likely than not, that most HS kids won’t turn into a seven figure portal guy. It much more likely they be in a low to mid-six figure portal guy. For retention purposes, a kid from an upper middle class background is less likely to leave a place the like and feel comfortable due having a nice amount saved up already.
It is still early
I’ve heard it as “Ya git whatcha git and ya don’t throw a fit.”
Oh, Nell Carter also had a massive cocaine habit which is a bit strange, for obvious reasons.
Wait, what? She was 3 bills large. That’s wild! Now I gotta google this. I love you.
Edit: holy hell that’s wild. I am blown away by this but it does make sense in retrospect as even as a kid I thought she was off the rails when she destroyed that scale in the intro. Wild!
I have always liked Entenmann’s Raspberry Danish Twist with my morning coffee.
Best when heated up a little!
