Good for Mekhi. Solid player, nothing flashy, serviceable mid major guard who just won’t fill up the stat sheet

I find Reece Potter to be a very interesting case study. And I am not critical of his choices in the least. But here is a player who would be a key piece of Miami’s rotation and get solid minutes. Yet, he goes to UK, where he is from, to medical RS this year, and next year, one has to assume his playing minutes will be limited. So he has prioritized being at home, and saying he plays for UK and an SEC team, over almost guaranteed playing time. Granted the money is also a piece, but clearly this is a player who made the decision that other factors play a bigger priority than playing time. Again not critical of his life decisions, just interesting.

Given how UK has completely struck out in the portal so far, he might get some time out of necessity next year…

For those that think this bubble is going to pop at the top any time soon, the plaintiffs in the House settlement that blew open revenue share in college sports says the College Sports Commission (the group supposed to police revenue share and NIL limits) is being TOO restrictive in the current environment and the paltry limits barely being enforced anyway need to be removed.

This would effectively be allowed unlimited, unreviewed NIL if MMR and Apparel companies can be open funnels. Not that anything is being enforced anyways, but this would say you can’t enforce it.

AAU/Travel/highly competitive youth sports culture today just seems miserable and is only being made worse by NIL, and it’s creep into HS sports.

I’m sure there are few parents on here with teens who have had good experiences, but I’m guessing there are some horror stories.

My 7 year old plays very rec league soccer. Some of his friends joined the ā€œeliteā€ travel teams this year. I was talking to one parent who thought that meant they’d be traveling around Indy metro each weekend to play around the city and suburbs and was flabbergasted when suddenly he was in St Louis, and Louisville, and Columbus OH, etc almost every single weekend.

Totally absurd to be caravanning 1st graders all around the midwest for games.

AAU sports is a cancer for youth and HS sports. It was supposed to be about extra development, but its just become an ego boost for coaches. Its a strain on family financials and a complete waste of ROI if you will. Thousands of dollars spent and no return on future playing prospects for the kids. It steals from other experiences and family time, vacations etc that bonds family and children.
