I was thinking the other day… can you imagine if the transfer portal had been in effect in the early 2000s? Middling (or maybe even better than middling) BCS conference schools’ ADs would have probably been tripping over themselves to fire their coaches to try to hire Hep in hopes of adding an extra incentive for Ben to transfer.
IU coach is older than Chuck. Just sayin’
Chuck would be way underqualified for the Bears and he wouldn’t be anywhere near a list of actual candidates, but he’d probably get more out of the team than Eber-lose is doing now.
What is Chuck’s OOC record?
Kevin Wilson out at Tulsa. There are now 6 AAC openings. 3 of those are coaches fired before their second season ended. I think the AAC is in for a rude awakening about the results it can reasonably demand.
Kevin was Randy Walker’s OC at Miami. He was in Oxford from 90-98.
Wils and Walker go all the way back to Chapel Hill. He played center there when Coach Walk was a GA. Pretty sure James Patton went with him to Oklahoma after N’Western. (And went to IU as well)
Indiana once hired Kevin Wilson, thinking he’d be their Curt Cignetti. Instead, he “resigned” after investigations into his mistreatment of injured players.
Wilson fired from tusla
Wilson was great in Castaway.
Just sayin’
IIRC he did a decent enough job getting IU to the middle of the pack by the time he was canned. Nothing crazy or near what Cig has done, but the blueprint for rebuilding a lousy program was a lot different in the early 2010s versus 2024.
I’d be curious to see stats on retread hires and how they’re doing in the age of the portal versus the previous twenty years. Seems like a few coaches who were decent earlier in their careers just aren’t able to evolve, it’s worth keeping in mind for whenever we have to replace Chuck whether it’s in a few weeks or a decade.
I don’t see Chuck being a fit or having interest at any of these AAC program openings.
I could definitely see Purdue sniffing around though if/when they pull the plug on Walters.
Definitely an issue at UNC with Mack Brown. His program now disappoints annually. Gave up 70 points to JMU in Chapel Hill this season. Just lost to BC by 21 in Chestnut Hill. Sitting at 6-5.
7-5 seems like his ceiling with the Heels these days.
I’m a Miami Grad and a huge fan of Purdue (first one not to go there). Purdue decided to hire the young trendy coach with limited experience. They would be insane to not at least interview Chuck when that job opens up. He checks all the boxes.
-Has won everywhere
-from Chicagoland and has coached in the Midwest his whole career
-Built a program from literally the depths of hell (our beloved Hawks) and now have them competitive every year
Walters probably gets one more year unfortunately but Chuck should be on short list when it opens.
I suppose it’s a semi-mixed bag in terms of recent retreads. Brown, McElwain, Chip Kelly, and Mike Locksley, and Don Brown have declined over time while a few like Bret Bielema and Lane Kiffin managed to evolve. Definitely negative though.
Old Mack won’t be back in town…
I agree 100%
What’s yours?
Ok I joke. But, for what it’s worth, I have a friend who is very tight with a major D1 coach who knows I love all things MU sports. He told me Miami as a program is absolutely being noticed for the quality of the players we develop. And he said that in regard to that program watching us.
He’s a big money booster which makes a logical connection why he’s friends with a local tycoon like me. So there!
Ryan Walters out at Purdue. And Chuck Martin will not be replacing him.
Purdue has the worst class recruiting-wise in the BIG. It’s a Don’t situation there. Someone’s going to have to do a Cignetti and bring in half their team. I think I saw they only have 9 signed recruits? If that’s true, big ouch.
